Black Privielge

Charlamagne Tha God—the self-proclaimed “Prince of Pissing People Off,” co-host of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, and “hip-hop’s Howard Stern”—shares his unlikely success story as well as how embracing one’s truths is a fundamental key to success and happiness.

In his new book, Charlamagne Tha God presents his comic, often controversial, and always brutally honest insights on how living an authentic life is the quickest path to success. Beginning with his journey from the small town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina to his headline grabbing interviews with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and Hillary Clinton, he shares how he turned his troubled early life around by owning his (many) mistakes and refusing to give up on his dreams, even after his controversial opinions got him fired from several on-air jobs.

Combining his own story with bold advice and his signature commitment to honesty at all costs, Charlamagne hopes this book will give others the confidence to live their own truths.

The title of the book is a detriment, "Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It ". It's basically unfortunate. In this, the fifth year of the still active #BlackLivesMatter movement, the title comes off like the author... braggadocious, smug, and elitist. The book would have been enhanced by the traditional picture section found in the middle of most memoirs.

However, Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It is a good first effort by Charlamagne who, with more development, has a lot of potential as a hip-hop author.

Tamika Williams: CEO

Back when he was a young radio D.J. in Columbia, S.C., Charlamagne Tha God had a regular feature on his show called “The Ghetto Psychiatrist.” Listeners called in to seek advice, which the host would offer in a style that was opinionated and blunt.

Always, historically, throughout the ’hood, everybody would come to me with their problems, Charlamagne said, sitting inside the Roxy Hotel in TriBeCa one recent afternoon. Self-help is something that I’ve always been into. I thought I was going to be a psychiatrist.

If the book has a theme, it is honesty — or as Principle 6 states, “Live Your Truth.” Charlamagne opens with an unflattering story about getting beat up as a teenager, criticizes his own looks and “egg-shaped dome,” and admits to being overwhelmed when he first did radio in the city.
